You don't always have to use food as the reward when you're training.

You can incorporate toys, and a great way to do that is with your stay cue. So let's say your dog really likes the tennis ball. Have a tennis ball in your hand, ask him to sit, stay, and then at first, maybe just toss the tennis ball back and forth in your hands.

If your dog is a committed fetcher, he'll probably try to hop up the moment that tennis ball moves from one hand to the other. If he does, just get him calmly back in position and try it again. And if you're just starting out with your stay cue, make sure you release your dog from the stay before you throw the toy as his reward.

Ultimately, your dog should be able to maintain his stay when you throw a toy, but if you're just starting out, he's not ready for that yet.

Start having stay training sessions. See if you can work up to bouncing the ball and your dog maintaining his stay. Maybe you could toss the ball to a friend and have them toss it back while your dog maintains his stay.

Then, the moment that you're going to release him and you're going to give him the ball as the reward, make sure you say free—or whatever your release word is—but make sure you say free right before you throw the ball.
